Adventures of the Chili Kind
By Liz Gilbert

I am a spice junky. Hot sauce, peppers of all kinds, salsa, I can't get enough of it. I can't count how many dares I've won. My friends love to try to make me cry, but I'm a trooper, and I can hold my spicy foods. (the secret is not to drink anything)

One of my favorite meals is chili, and my philosophy is definitely, the spicier the better.

Since it's summer, and I'm on my last summer vacation, I've decided to take a driving tour of the United States. I've always wanted to drive across America, and even though gas prices are crazy ridiculous right now, I didn't want to put it off any longer. You're only in college once (at least you hope).

So, I started mapping out my trip across America, and doing some pretty important research. I started looking online to find the best places to eat chili -the world famous ones. I'm mean, hey, it's as good of a theme as any to follow. I of course planned on all the big spots. I hit Cincinnati, Texas, Colorado, but the hard part was finding all the places in between. I found so many county fairs; I may never ride a Farris wheel again.

Once I had finished all the research, I had mapped out 21 stops, for a one-month trip. That trip was amazing, I saw so many things and places that I never imagined could have existed. Yosemite Park was like another world. I rafted down the Colorado River, and saw an awesome rodeo in Texas.

After eating at 32 different chili spots, I only teared up once, in Texas. Man that stuff was hot, but so, so good.

Now that I'm back, and school's about to start back up, I've decided to continue my adventures in the dorm, by trying something I've never done before.

Cooking my own chili. Hey, I'm a 21 year old college senior. I moved from my parents' house to the dorms. I never really needed to cook anything for myself. I know, I'm spoiled. But, at the end of this year, I'm going to be out in the work force, living on my own for the first time. And I think it's time I learn to survive on my own.

I found this great website www.best-chili-recipes-ever.com online with a whole bunch of chili recipes and when I moved back into the dorm, I invited everyone on my floor to dinner. I made the Spicy Mouth Chili, and HOT damn! I'm an awesome chef! I guess it's not too hard to mess up, but everyone loved my chili! There wasn't even any left for me to have for lunch the next day!

So, I've decided to make this a weekly thing, I'm going to try a new chili recipe each week, and become self-sufficient. I'm so proud!

I want to challenge everyone this week, to try something they've never tried before. Cook, sing karaoke, try out for that school play, anything really. Just be brave and try. You might just find something new that you love and hopefully, it will be spicy.
