I'm Frying My Turkey

I'M FRYING MY TURKEY
By Kate Carlson

This Thanksgiving I'm trying something different. As a northern transplant in the south, the idea of frying your Thanksgiving turkey seemed crazy, and actually kind of gross.

But last year, my husband and I went to a friend's house for Thanksgiving. We weren't aware though that they were going to be frying their turkey. When we got there and saw out friend in the front yard, with a large deep fryer, it was too late to run.

That would have just been rude.

So, we smiles and went inside instead. Apparently this was part of their Thanksgiving tradition. We weren't going to say anything, but I was seriously questioning my friend's sanity.

We sat and watched the end of the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade, just in time to see Santa, and then found the Lions game. Because, it's not really Thanksgiving without watching the Detroit Lions play football.

A few hours later it was finally time to sit down to eat dinner.

I was instructed to sit near the turkey, and surprisingly enough, it smelled fantastic! I mean, seriously fantastic.

It had only taken about 45 minutes to cook, and it was so juicy and good.

I have to admit that I was shocked. I had never really imagined that it could be this good. I started to feel guilty, because in my head I had thought our friends were completely nuts.

I enjoyed the turkey so much; they let me bring home a bunch of leftovers.

I am now one of the Fried Turkey Converted and I have willingly joined the church of Fried Turkey. I honestly can't see myself ever slaving for hours and hours again cooking my turkey in the oven. That just seems silly. Instead of slaving over a hot stove all day, chained to the kitchen, I can actually spend time with my friends and family. Which after all is the whole point of Thanksgiving.

My husband and I will be frying our own turkey this Thanksgiving. Our friends are coming over this year and we've invited a few others to come. I'm so excited.

We went out and bought all the necessary equipment. We've got a ginormous cooking pot, a gas burner, the metal handle, meat and oil thermometers, big rubber gloves, and a fire extinguisher. Apparently, the grease can cause lots of problems, but our friend has promised to help, since he's such a pro at frying turkeys.
I even went online and found a really tasty sounding recipe. www.best-thanksgiving-recipes-ever.com They actually have a whole bunch of other great Thanksgiving recipes too, so our table will be full this year.

Here is a few rules to remember when frying a turkey.

1. Set up your turkey fryer in an open space on a hard surface like concrete, away from buildings, people and anything else you want to keep.
2. Keep kids and pets away.
3. Before cooking, dunk the frozen turkey into the pot with tap water already in it. If water goes over the side, dump some out until it is just covering the turkey. Take the turkey out and note the water level. That is how much oil you need and not a drop more. Remember, if the oil spills over the side you'll have a nasty fire!
4. Have a fire extinguisher on hand.

I highly suggest that you step out of your traditional mold this Thanksgiving, and try to fry your turkey. You will still have mashed potatoes, yams, cranberry sauce, green beans, cornbread, dressing, and even pumpkin pie. Frying the turkey is just faster. I promise you won't be disappointed.
