The assistant in a small company could be the CEO's wife. The guy who who handles email could very well own the company. There's no exact way of knowing who you are dealing with in this day and age of communication. Treat everyone on a top level, even if they hold a bottom position. Don't change your sales approach. The very best in our business always sell themselves to everyone, all of the time. Let's face it, you can use all the help you can get to make a sale. Friendly exchanges with a valued support person could get you information that you need to make your next sale. You could have a great first meeting, all because you took a few minutes to acknowledge the importance of someone, who may not usually get recognized in their position. On the opposite side of the sales spectrum, just about anybody can kill a sale, dropping negatives about being treated poorly. If you get crabby with the staff, don't expect any royal treatment.
