The new Apple iPhone - A Curse in Disguise?

500,000+ units in a single weekend - not a bad sales report for the newest, coolest gadget to hit the market. Apple's iPhone hit the pavement running and the results have been very positive.

However, part of me is still wondering if, in all the excitement, we have forgotten (or are trying to ignore) the fact that the jury is still out on the safety of these wonderful new gadgets.

I'm as much of an addict as the rest of the population, wondering if there's a way to surgically attach my iPod to my ears, but I'm also being confronted more and more with statistics that make me wonder if I need to pull back from all of this for a while. Even more important, should I be disconnecting my children from their electronic games, wireless computers, and techno-gadgets?

There has been a shocking increase in the amount of eye and brain cancers, with the problem seeming to concentrate itself on the side of the head where the person uses their cell phone. Testicular cancer and infertility in young boys is on the rise, seemingly due to them holding their lap top computers/game controls in their laps.

What's even more worrisome is that big companies like Disney are now targeting ever younger audiences for things like cell phones without having done the due diligence to discover if these tools really are safe. They simply cover their backs with clauses in fine print excusing themselves from any and all possible lawsuits that make them responsible for poor or non-existent research into the possible negative side-effects.

I guess that puts the onus squarely back on us as parents (where it probably belongs) to do the foot work and research to discover if this is something we want to expose our kids to or not. It's hard for us parents to know where to begin with the research - many of us are not scientists, or
