The Diaper Bag Dilemma
by Karen Sullen

Choosing the perfect diaper carrier is all in the bag—the type of bag, that is. Since moms usually carry much more than diapers, a good diaper bag needs to be roomy and versatile. Yet, it's not just about practicality. Diaper bags can also make a statement about your sense of style. Whether trendy or traditional, rest assured that there is a bag that is just perfect for you and your baby. Here are some tips for choosing the right travel companion.

Dimensions matter: Size really matters when choosing the right diaper bag. Be sure to pick one that will grow with your baby's needs. While the bag may only need to accommodate diapers, bottles and wipes initially, it should be able to carry bigger toys, blankets and snacks as needed. It's also helpful if your purse or necessities can have a place inside the bag, to avoid carrying a bag for baby and a bag for you. Having a diaper bag for everyday use and a larger one for travelling is also a good idea.

Deep pockets deliver: Instead of one main inside section, consider bags that are compartmentalized with deep pockets. The more pockets the better. Expandable sections and pockets go a long way in keeping items organized. However, having plenty of pockets does not mean that the bag has to be bulky. Messenger bags are a sleek and stylish option.

Diapers in disguise: Many diapers bags are disguised as trendy totes. But one peek inside will reveal that they are much more! Complete with compartments and pockets galore, these designer bags allow Mom to take care of baby without abandoning her sense of style.

Don't forget the accessories: A bag that comes with its own accessories is always a plus. For the ultra-organized, these additional bottle holders, change purses and necessity pouches are functional and help you find things quickly.

Dismiss the bag altogether: The latest trend in diaper bags is not a bag at all. It's a backpack. Backpacks provide plenty of pockets and hands-free mobility, especially helpful if you plan to use a baby carrier. Many backpacks also include insulated bottle holders, outer pockets for your beverages and internal holders for keys and cell phones, making them very handy, indeed.

Dad's choice: When choosing the color and pattern of the diaper bag, keep in mind that you may not be the only one to carry it. Let's face it. Dads may shy away from a hot-pink paisley diaper bag. Neutral colors or solids may be a better choice.

As you begin your search for the perfect bag, storage capacity and comfort balanced with quality should be your first considerations. Remember, you don't have to spend a bundle on a bag for your little bundle of joy. There are many cost-effective solutions that will accommodate your needs and your budget.
