Building and Marketing your Website

Building and Marketing your Website

After studying for about 8 months how to build a website and actually building it, now the difficult times are here.

As you know, your business is only X's and O's on a server until you market it and people actually see it and know it's there. Well, the marketing end is really tougher than I thought.

It's one thing to build a site and see the results immediately, then market it and wonder if anyone sees it. Or more to the point, cares enough about it to return and see what's new.

I joined a program called TOPS (Top Online Profits) to learn how to build a site. It's a three-phase program and you have to really know what you're doing in each phase to move to the next. The cost is minimal to join, because for what you learn it would probably cost thousands to actually go to school for it.

I now have the knowledge to change anything on my site as well as build a site for someone else. This can be where you make some serious coin.

On to marketing. I've tried the free stuff. Traffic Exchanges, newsletters, networking sites, and they all work to a certain degree. The problem is, you're really not generating any targeted traffic. I haven't tried pay per click yet. With Christmas coming up fast, I really didn't have the money. This is one of my New Year's resolutions though. If you want to go this route, DO YOUR HOMEWORK FIRST! Keyword research and the whole bit. If you don't, you can really waste A LOT of money if you're not sure what you're doing. If you do this the right way, it can be very cost effective.

The only sure advice I can give is to keep trying. If you don't know about marketing, read articles, study and read some more. There's numerous resources you can use, but before you dive in and spend money, know what you're doing.

There's been frustrating times for me. First learning HTML, then hosting the site, and now marketing it. But it was worth it.

What I really know is, I want to run my own business from home and you know what? I WILL do it because I want it to badly.
