How Search Engines Work…
by IMGi Internet Markerting

Many Search Engine Optimisers believe there may be upwards of 1,000 factors that determine a pages rank within the SEs listings. However, it’s possible to breakdown these factors into just four groups.

• Keyword Prominence
• Keyword Density
• Spam
• Links from other sites

All four factors have evolved over time and are concerned with creating more relevant results for the user. Also all four factors are or can be determined by keywords

Keyword Prominence
Search Engines study where and when a keyword appears on a web page, such as in a sub heading, link or paragraph. A search engine also evaluates where in each of these whether they are the first in a sub-heading, the second word in a link or at the end of a paragraph. Search engines decided on what level of prominence would be the most relevant to a surfer and weights its formula accordingly

Keyword Density
Search Engines study the frequency of a keyword within a page and also the frequency within particular areas such as sub-heading, links or a single paragraph. Again Search Engines decide on the level of frequency that it believe would create the most relevant results for the user and then amends its ranking formula

Spam
In relation to keywords, Search Engines have decided that if the two above factors are abused then the web page must be spam and penalise it accordingly. This is usually called keyword stuffing as the page is filled with keywords with many irrelevant or inappropriate

Links from other sites
Search Engines also rank web pages by the pages that link to them, it important that for a web to obtain a high ranking it must get links from other pages with high prominence and density for that keyword.
