Srinagar Travel Destination Guide
by Anand

Gateway to the most beautiful place in the Indian subcontinent, Srinagar is simply ‘Paradise on Earth’. Lovely lakes, exotic gardens and alpine meadows make the city every tourist’s dream destination. Located in the heart of the lovely Kashmir Valley, Srinagar has the mighty Jhelum River, which drains itself into the Wular Lake, running across its landscape. Orchards bearing tempting fruits with cheerfully chirping birds on trees are sure to be a delight for everyone. The height at which Srinagar lies, gives it a salubrious climate throughout the year and hence is the most sought after tourist destination in the Indian subcontinent.

Known mostly for its sparkling lakes, the Dal Lake is like a gem in the city of Srinagar. Described as ‘lake par excellence’, it attracts the maximum crowd in Srinagar. It offers a spectacular sight and is an amazing spot to walk around. The best way to explore the pristine beauty of the lake is a ride across it on a pretty shikara. Another lake which commands importance is the Wular Lake, which is famed as the largest fresh water lake in India. The lake offers a spectacular sight as the crystal clear waters reflect the majestic mountains in its backdrop.

Srinagar also breathes an air of spirituality, which is reflected by the number of religious places the city has. The most famous religious place in Srinagar is the Hazratbal Shrine, a sacred Muslim pilgrimage. The shrine houses relics of the Prophet and is hence held in great reverence by his followers. Another Muslim shrine, which holds importance, is the Khanqah-e-Molla, which is believed to contain the ‘Secret of Allah’. It is one of the oldest Muslim shrines in Srinagar and is an outstanding example of fine wooden architecture. The Jama Masjid in Srinagar is another major tourist attraction in the city.

Amongst Hindu religious places, the Shankaracharya Temple holds the place of foremost importance. The temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva and is the oldest shrine in Kashmir. The hill on which the temple is situated is called Takht-e-Suleiman, which commands a panoramic view of the entire valley. The Khir Bhawani Temple, dedicated to Ragnya Devi, is yet another important Hindi place of worship in the valley.

Some exotic Mughal Gardens adorn the city of Srinagar. Nishat Garden on the banks of the Dal Lake offers a pleasant spot to stroll around and admire the loveliness of the lake. The Shalimar Garden is a four terraced garden with fountains fed by a canal.

A popular holiday spot, Srinagar has a huge number of hotels. These hotels range across all budgets and offer all modern comforts and amenities. Most of the popular hotels in Srinagar are concentrated around the Dal Lake. A popular choice of hotel in Srinagar is the houseboats that float on the lake and offer a wonderful experience. But, even as there are a lot of hotels in Srinagar, do book one much in advance.
