Back Swimming with the Great White shark! by Sylvie Leochko Imagine! You are entering a solid metal cage that will be the only protective shield that will separate you from the merciless jaws of a Great White shark! Slowly, the cage is entering the sharks’ natural habitat, invading their privacy. As you feel the cold water slowly covering from head to toe, you feel the cage lowering in the ocean. As you see the trail of blood, chum and baits that are now surrounding the cage as an invite to these apex predators, your heart is racing, your head is pounding and your breathing is labored. Then suddenly, coming out of nowhere, you come face to face with the open jaws of a 15 foot long Great White shark. You rapidly realize that you are not only swimming with the Great White shark, you are also living the experience of a lifetime! Cage diving with the Great White shark is a unique tourist attraction that is offered in certain worldwide locations such as Guadalupe Island and Cape Town. In fact, while other places are also offering this exciting experience, Guadalupe Island and Cape Town are the most famous ones. Guadalupe Island is home both a luxurious flora and fauna. It is one of the largest habitats for the Great White shark as it is also home to the Guadalupe Fur Seal and the Northern Elephant seal. This Mexican island is located 241 km (150 miles) off the coast of Mexico’s Baja California Peninsula, in the Pacific Ocean. Cape Town, South Africa has the largest Great White shark population worldwide, which is located about 5 miles off the African coast, surrounding Dyer Island. The area occupied by the Great White shark also known as Shark Alley is their main feeding area. Dyer Island offers them their favorite food as it is home to a colony of 50,000 seals. It is also home to various seabirds and endangered specie known as the African Penguins. Of course, Australia also offers this experience as they are also home to quite a large population of Great White sharks. As you can see, if you are a traveler at heart, in search of exciting tourist attractions, swimming with the Great White shark will definitely provide you with all the excitement that you want and so much more. While diving experience is not always a prerequisite, it is preferred as the experience as a scuba diver will be helpful. I dare you to try it out! Beware; this experience is not for the faint of heart. Swimming with the Great White shark…enough excitement to fill a lifetime of memories! Author's Biography: My name is Sylvie Leochko.
