by David Urmann

The Mountain west is comprised of the states Mo.,Id.,Wy.,Co.,Nv.,Ut. Although all of these places are famous for their striking beauty there are a large number of aspects of this area that most people do not often explore but are certainly worthy of attention. If you have the time and ability then make a point of visiting at least one or more of these attractions on your next trip.

1. Visit the Thermal Springs- This geographic area has a great deal of thermic activity which has resulted in a a lot of bathing hot pools in these states. These pools vary immensely in how much they have been developed and there is a pool to fit all types of tastes. For those that are more outdoorsy then White Sulfur Springs Hotel has the best pool and hotel for you. Those that like more of a resort feel, check out some of the hot springs that Colorado has to offer.

2. Search for Pictographs- The ancient peoples of the Intermountain west were very expressive, and a a lot of there 4000 year old art can still be seen today, chipped into rock surfaces and overhanging cliffs across the area. For a quick tour, Fremont State Park in Utah has a great trail and interpretive center, for those that like hiking Grand Gulch in Utah is a great place to spend time at.

3. Tour the Lesser Known National Monuments- If you have not been to Bryce Canyon, then by all means you should go there first, but for those of you that have already done the main circuit of parks in the region you might think about visiting the smaller ones. All together, this region has over 50 National sites, and most of the state have outstandingstate park systems as well.

4. Check Out the Regional Museums (as well as the most popular ones)- A lot of the most interesting museums are those that are not on the map, like the small museum in Three Forks, Montana in which the local people gathered memorabilia from their town spanning a 100 years. Of course, some of the bigger museums are worth stopping by as well, such as the Buffalo Bill Museum in Cody, Wy. This museum has five separate galleries which cover some aspect of the west such as Indians of the West or Modern Western Art.

5. Go Skiing- The Mountains are famous for its sunny weather, but we also have the best powder around. For those of you that are not interested in trying snowboarding, you might try x-country skiing. Sun Valley, Idaho has great trails another option the Beaverhead-Deerlodge NF in Montana.

6. Explore anAlpine Lake this summer– The mountain ranges of the western US are full of small and secluded lakes. A great many of them are frequently visited but a few of the most beautiful are off the beaten track and often require a rewarding journey to get to. One of our top choices is Fremont Lake in the Wind River Mountains. This alpine lake is surrounded by tall cliffs and picturesque mountains that were created by the retreqating glaciers of the last ice age. The Wind River mnts. are reknow for fishing and backpacking opportunities. Another great destination in the Wind River Mountains is Lonsome Lake in the Cirque of the Towers area in the southern section of the Wind River Mountains.

As you can see, there are a number of things that you can do in the mountain west, beyond the boring car tour. Any of the above suggestions will not only be exciting and fun but will provide you with many happy memories for years to come.
