Back CAPE VERDE ISLANDS - THE NEXT BIG THING FOR HOLIDAY HOME BUYERS by Marco Pietropoli CAPE VERDE ISLANDS - THE NEXT BIG THING FOR HOLIDAY HOME BUYERS The rain is lashing down, the train is late, it’s getting dark already, and last year’s Summer holiday seems a lifetime away. We all know the feeling, and it is one which has lead to record numbers of Brits choosing to move to the sun, swapping a damp UK lifestyle for one of more permanent sunshine, and more user friendly prices. This phenomenon has been growing for years, and there are plenty of destinations and developers out there ready to convince would be ex-pats that they have the answer to the meaning of living happily under the sun. The crucial point however is that ‘living happily under the sun’ means that your new home must be an investment as well as an escape from the British weather. After all, for the vast majority of us, our home is our biggest investment and a new one also needs to demonstrate that it too will be worth considerably more than the purchase price in a few years’ time. In other words, when it comes to buying a home in the sun it is all about picking a destination that, whilst it is good value now will see prices shooting up over the next decade or so thus providing early buyers with a good return on their investment. To put it another way, the canny international property buyer is looking for ‘the next big thing’ and wants to find it before the rest of us do. There is understandably a lot of excitement in the international property about destinations that, whilst they are little known now, are likely to flourish in the future giving the early investor a good chance of making a decent return in the long run. So what should this ‘undiscovered gem’ have to offer buyers and investors? A simple check list would certainly include: -Guaranteed sunshine for most of the year. -Plenty of uncrowded beaches. -Direct flights out of the UK. -The ability to buy now at a low cost. -A place with a growing tourism market from the UK. And if you can add-in the fact that almost no one has heard of the place, then you are already one step ahead of the game. So, let’s put all the old favourites behind us and head somewhere new. In fact let’s head out into the Atlantic ocean from West Africa and with a bit of luck we will find the Cape Verde Islands - which is just what Portuguese explorers did in the 15th century. Wind the clock forward to 1975 and the islands have achieved independence and are now a self-governing democratic entity. There are eight main islands in the group, and whilst none of them has yet been developed to a western standard, from the amount of interest now being shown by both holiday companies and developers, Cape Verde ticks a lot of the boxes when it comes to holidays and homes in the sun. They have the beaches, they have year round sun, and the vital ingredient; direct flights from the UK. For the last year charter operator Flystar Astraeus has been operating from Gatwick and Manchester. Now the Cape Verde islands own national carrier TACV has started services from London Stansted. Said Marco Pietropoli, director of RMDS, one of the UK’s leading property agents that specialises in Cape Verde: “It has to be said that, right now, there is a certain pioneering element to buying a property in the islands. They are still part of the developing world, but, as a result they are beautiful, uncrowded and unspoiled. That is why so many investors in getting in now, when prices are so low”. Low means apartments close to the best beaches from €50,000 with significant rental potential as well as good capital growth.
