Bookcases – A Nomads View On How To Decide Which Style!
by Peter Cutforth

Speaking as someone who has an abundance of books in her life, I can tell you I am a tad bit confused about the role that bookcases play in my life. With all of the books I own and have yet to read, I can never really decide whether to give them a permanent home or keep them stashed away in a box.

Part of this issue is a result of the lack of permanency within my own life. I find a new place, hoping that this is it - finally I am here to stay. However, all of a sudden a new roommate pops up out of nowhere and after driving me insane, I find myself moving out again.

This is no more than I can say for the life of my books. When I do move into a new place, they are typically stashed away somewhere, dreaming of having their very own bookcases!

From Boxes To Bookcases Finally
Finally, after so many moves and a great deal of thought, I have finally decided to buy my books a home. However, even though my books are excitedly awaiting the permanency of bookcases, I am left with the question how to choose the exact style, color, and kind that I want. There are so many choices that more confusion simply sets in, leaving me the inability to concentrate or thing, There are so many different styles, which should I choose?

Should I opt for a contemporary or modern look? Perhaps the Mediterranean look will suit me better. No maybe the French, eclectic, shabby chic, traditional, baroque, or even Goth look will be the ticket. Can you understand my dilemma here? Which bookcases should I be choosing, to match which style I am trying for.

Mission style bookcases seem to be perfect for me, I think. I appreciate the simplicity and steadiness offered and these bookcases are the most popular of all types available. There has to be a reason for this popularity right.

Some History…
Bookcases were developed within the 17th century. These first arrived within the confines of libraries and universities storing collection, after collection of literature. By the end of the 17th century, bookcases were a commonplace in nearly every household. The time period, dictated the overall design of the bookcase from the Georgian breakfront to the dwarf or upper stage styles.

So Much Choice!
There is no shortage of styles when it comes to bookcases; however, it is important that the style chosen fit your needs, your books, and your overall decorative scheme. As for me, I think I will go with a sleek, trusting, and straight angle design, just in case I should ever have to move again.
